FORCE: Upsetting Rape Culture
2010-Present
Hannah Brancato co-founded FORCE: Upsetting Rape Culture in 2010 with Rebecca Nagle. FORCE is currently collectively led Charnell Covert, E Cadoux, Hannah Brancato, Mora Fernandez, and Shanti Flagg. By and for survivors, FORCE is an art and organizing collective. Nationally known for producing large-scale public art, FORCE believes that a more difficult and honest conversation needs to happen in order to face the realities of sexual violence. The Monument Quilt by FORCE is a collection of over 3,000 stories by survivors of sexual and intimate partner violence and our allies, painted and stitched onto red fabric. Our stories blanket highly public, outdoor places to create and demand space to heal, and resist a singular narrative about sexual violence.
Pictured here are 3 of FORCE’s many art actions: the 50th and final display of the Monument Quilt in June 2019 on the National Mall; Rape is Rape, a 2012 projection on the US Capitol; and Mourning and Rage, a 2013 poem by a survivor, floated on the reflecting pool in DC.
