		<description>T-shirts and found fabric
2010

These t-shirts are the results of a six session workshop about gender stereotypes in the media. Through group activities and discussions about music videos, advertising, and social expectations, the group began to identify how other people's ideas about gender effect their own. They designed and made t-shirts that reflected on contradictions that they discovered, and that celebrated their identities.

These images are of youth from Wide Angle Youth Media, May 2010.

<description>GET IT OFF YOUR CHEST, PLUCK IT FROM HER BREAST
by Hannah Brancato, Kendra Hebel, and Sarah Tooley

This interactive performance meditating on shame and the body confronts the unrealistic beauty standards contemporary American society imposes via representations of women’s bodies in the mainstream media. Artists Hannah Brancato, Kendra Hebel, and Sarah Tooley mesh the vaudevillian circus side show freak booth with the sterile, hierarchical, physician’s office to bring you Get It Off Your Chest, Pluck It From Her Breast. Participant/patients engage with the layered artwork on a visual, emotional, and physical level.

Get It Off Your Chest, Pluck It From Her Breast, was originally performed in January 2010 at Püss Füst, an all women arts festival based in Baltimore. The performance has since been staged at the Transmodern Festival’s Pedestrian Services Exquisite, the 14K Cabaret curated by Laure Drogoul, and the 2010 International Drag King Extravagana.

Dimensions variable (approximately 20"x30")
2011

In Fall 2011, I led a group of high school students at Paul's Place Outreach in Baltimore in a memorial quilting workshop. Over two months, each individual in the group created their own quilt in memory of a person or an idea. Although I invited the group to use this project as an opportunity to process death and talk about loss, I also invited them to think about memorials as monuments, or celebrations.

Below are statements about each work, in the order in which it is displayed.

1-2: Ties by Morren Jackson. This quilt is about African Americans who can turn into businessmen. The background represents African American heritage. The ties represent business and handwork.

3-4: Still in my Heart by Ke-Ke. My quilt is about my family. I used zebra print, polka dots, bright green, and bows, because it shows how even though I’m growing up and keeping myself busy, they will always stay in my heart.

5: Be Careful What Your Wish For by Jeffrey Criag. In memory of Matthew Ramsey. My quilt is about a friend who I thought I didn’t care about. I remember I always told him to stay outta trouble because I knew what was going to happen to him before he knew it. I remember when I told him I would never miss him if he never listened to me. He would always tell me “don’t make the mistakes I did” in his past. He always looked out for me when my family was not there. We always here beside each other no matter how much trouble we got in. He always wore black shoes, so every time I get a new pair of shoes they have to have black on them. I included the pocket from a pair of jeans he gave to me in this quilt.

6: Thomas by Bernard Turman. My quilt is about my uncle Thomas Penniz that died. I used all hardcore manly colors because he was a hard person, but I also used pink fabric because everyman has a soft side.

Is it ok to joke about rape? In this short documentary, Mason Ross's 2010 Whartscape performance instigates a community of artists to address what it means to make light of this topic. Does it help to de-stigmatize the issue, or does it make survivors feel unsafe?

Produced and Edited by Hannah Brancato

The Jewelry Project is a part of the art program at House Of Ruth Maryland. The way that it works: shelter residents work with volunteers to design and make jewelry; sometimes volunteers teach clients, and often clients teach volunteers.

The jewelry is made in exchange for a jewelry making kit or supplies to make more accessories, promoting continued art making.

100% of the proceeds from the Jewelry Project goes back into the House Of Ruth Maryland's emergency shelter based art program.

POWER SUIT is a collaborative quilt and documentary video about the relationship between power and the clothes we wear. It is a combination sociological study, journalistic investigation, and art project, in which the artist invites people to explain the significance of their choices in clothing through writing, interviews, and art-making. POWER SUIT demonstrates how our choices in clothing are connected to our sense of agency and our place in the world.

I first heard the term "mattress back" in an interview with Eva Barnes, a stockyards worker in Chicago, by Studs Terkel, in which she said, "What do you want me to do, get a mattress on my back and walk up and down 35th street?"

“What Gives People Power” is an oral history project focused on people defining power and control, based on their personal experience. Through interviews with domestic violence survivors and perpetrators, as well and staff and volunteers from the House Of Ruth Maryland, the project documents connections between perceptions of power and the cycle of violence. The resulting stories give voice to the stigmatized issue of domestic violence, while bringing to light the diverse ways and means that people empower themselves.

In this installation of the audio interviews, I created a listening booth encrusted with stereotypes about what gives people power. When visitors stepped inside the booth, they listened to honest and real reflections of that same subject.

This project is a collaboration between Sharlene McNeil and Hannah Brancato, with contributions from Naomi M., Lakiesha F., and Anita R
